These genres, especially the latter, are indisputably notorious for incorporating violent and fascist, if not suggestively satanic, images and language into their productions. In his personal statement, Bennett addresses this trend: “[like] many other industrial and experimental projects of the time, a lot of wildly varying areas of human transgression were explored, there was much artistic immersion in taboo areas of human expression.” An example of such transgression can be viewed in Dalhous’ video for “He Was Human And Belonged With Humans.” The visual content comes from Maya Deren’s Ritual In Transfigured Time, a piece which assesses rejection and abandonment of ritualistic behavior. Both the film and music video depict a muscularly chiseled white male moving in impressive and expressionistic ways, while women, the more protagonistic one being black, dance around him in celebration as well as observation. The man is emphasized as being deliberate, and seems to reject the black woman and chose others in her stead. She becomes confused and eventually afraid of his physical statements of power and conviction. The allegory of him standing on a pillar motionless and transfigured is similar to one commonly seen on fascist propaganda – or any propaganda, at that – with an angular face looking over a crowd of faceless individuals, certain of his leadership.
